Thanksgiving in First Grade

On Thursday we made a cute pumpkin pie craft, and then wrote a sequence of how we made the pie on Wednesday.

And then--after lunch--we tried it! Some liked it, some loved it, some did not like it.

Friday was crazy! I tried to keep it normal, but fun, but it was just HARD!

We finished up our week of maps and digraphs, and continued to practice subtracting 9 from teen numbers using tens frames (to have the visual without using fingers or a number line). I am working very hard to get the kids to "see" the numbers, and do the math with the picture--because that leads to greater understanding than just "counting backward on the number line." The second, third and fourth grade teachers will be so happy about this in the future!

The fun things we did was create "turkey leg" hats. The room was loud, and chaotic. But we managed to get them all done by the time our school-wide feast started. And Mrs. Black let us knead some bread for the Big Feast.

Thank you families that donated baby carrots to the feast.

I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving break, and if the kids want to do work...

1. Play Go Fish with a regular deck of cards (take out face cards). Instead of asking for the same number, ask for the partner to ten, then when you get a match--say the addition problem when you lay it down.
(I have a 6, I ask for a 4, I get a 4. When I lay it down I say "6+4=10.")

2. Read to your child every day. (Books from the library, kid friendly articles on the Internet, recipes that you are making for a big dinner, the schedule on the tv, comics, instruction manuals, the blog)

3. Write a sentence (or two...) about what you do every day.
I would LOVE to read these when the students come back to school on November 30!
