More good feels from Kindergarten...

Yesterday we tackled a tough sound. It is the sound ow and ou make in down and sound. One way to know when to use each spelling is to listen to what comes after the sound. If it is a n or l (or el) use ow; if it is anything else, use ou. Not all the kids are going to remember this (or care), but some do, and are ready to use it. Today we worked with those sounds and drew a cow. (And wrote a sentence.)

After recess, we talked about kindness and that today our kindness was to deliver a pack of Christmas pencils to a class. We put the pencils in a sack and very quietly went to a classroom down the hallway (Mrs. Chalashtari's classroom), and then put the bag by the classroom door and left before they could see who left it. We were quite pleased that no one caught us.

When we got back to the room, we wrote instruction cards for a serving of hot cocoa, and then each student got to choose who their bag would go to (in our building). Next up was to have each student bag up a serving of hot cocoa. When that was finished, we made our own hot cocoa. But it was HOT, so we let it cool as we traveled around the school delivering the bags. This time we were not doing it secretly, and it felt great to be appreciated by the receiving grown up.

After returning to our room, and drinking our hot cocoa, we wrote in our needs/wants book. Another fine example of Kindergarten writing.

Don't be surprised if your child asked to measure some items this weekend. We measured items, comparing it to a baggie of 30 pennies. ________ is heavier than 30 pennies. _________ is lighter than 30 pennies. Good skills here.

Recess is always a great time when there is very little wind and a great time playing. The kids have been so great about thanking the person who holds the doors for them. I love their manners and the kindness they show to each other.

Reading intervention was a joy today. Kids learning. Kids showing what they could do. Kids smiling, because they knew they knew.

I am excited to finish (can you believe it???) this semester STRONG and see what can be learned before we have our break. How many more sounds? How many more words? How many more sentences? How many more math sentences? How many more numbers? It is an exciting time in Kindergarten!!!
